Recap: Penn State vs. Navy

University Park, PA (Sports Network) - Matt McGloin tied a career best with four touchdown passes as Penn State won for the first time in the Bill O'Brien era with a 34-7 dismantling of the Navy Midshipmen at Beaver Stadium.

McGloin threw for 231 yards, four scores and no interceptions on 13-for-21 passing efficiency for Penn State (1-2). Sophomore Allen Robinson, who emerged as McGloin's favorite target earlier this season, caught five passes for 136 and three touchdowns. Bill O'Brien's first victory came after the Nittany Lions endured tough losses to Ohio University and Virginia.

For Navy (0-2), quarterback Trey Miller struggled to get into any sort of rhythm against the Nittany Lions defense. He completed just 6-of-16 pass attempts for 17 yards, and ran for 21 yards on 18 carries. Gee Gee Greene led the Midshipmen with 70 yards and a touchdown on eight carries.

Penn State scored on its first possession, a seven play drive highlighted by a 45-yard Allen Robinson reception, which put the Nittany Lions inside the Navy five yard line. Two plays later, McGloin scrambled and found Jesse James for the score. The touchdown catch was the first of James' career.

The Lions added to their lead on their next possession when McGloin found Robinson again, this time for a 45-yard touchdown. After two possessions, McGloin was 5-for-5 for 119 yards and two touchdowns.

Navy had an opportunity to cut into the Penn State lead late in the first quarter, but Miller was intercepted by Gerald Hodges on third-and-goal, ending a 12 play drive.

Robinson's second touchdown put the Lions up 20-0 with 9:45 remaining in the first half. Kicker Sam Ficken, who missed all four of his field goal attempts last week against Virginia, failed to convert the extra point.

Ficken's struggles came back to hurt the Lions late in the half. On fourth-and- goal from the nine yard line, O'Brien opted to keep his kicking unit on the sideline and go for it. McGloin's pass fell incomplete, which prevented Penn State from adding to its lead before halftime.

Late in the third quarter, Robinson caught his third touchdown pass on a deflection to increase the Nittany Lions lead to 27-0. Their final score came just minutes later when Mike Hull picked up a fumble and took it 74 yards untouched across the goal line.

Navy managed 371 yards of total offense, but was only able to find the end zone once.

Bill O'Brien becomes the first head coach at Penn State to win a football game aside from Joe Paterno since 1966.
