Norman, OK (Sports Network) - Oklahoma redshirt sophomore quarterback Kendal Thompson suffered a fractured right foot during Thursday morning's practice.

"We're optimistic that Kendal will return early in the season," coach Bob Stoops said. "Kendal will undergo a surgical procedure today. He has a very positive outlook and is eager to rejoin his teammates on the field as soon as possible."

The son of former Oklahoma quarterback Charles Thompson, Kendal did not play last season.

The starting quarterback job is now likely between Blake Bell and redshirt freshman Trevor Knight. Bell played in 13 games last season and completed 9- of-16 passes for 107 yards.

The Sooners open the season on Aug. 31 against Louisiana-Monroe.
