Recap: UNC Greensboro vs. Ga Southern
Greensboro, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Jelani Hewitt tallied 23 points and five assists as the Georgia Southern Eagles held off the UNC Greensboro Spartans for a 64-62 victory in a Southern Conference tilt at Greensboro Coliseum.
Kyle Doyle registered a double-double for GSU (11-12, 4-4 SoCon) with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Tre Bussey added 12 points on 4-of-11 shooting from the floor.
Jordan Potts came off the bench to pace the Spartans (11-13, 4-5) with 13 points. Kyle Cain contributed 11 points and eight boards while R.J. White also netted 11 points.
The Eagles took a narrow, 36-35, lead into the intermission after they shot 40 percent from the field and converted 9-of-14 attempts at the free-throw line in the first half. UNCG trailed at the break despite hitting on 50 percent of its field goal tries including 5-of-12 from beyond the arc in the opening 20 minutes of the contest.
GSU outscored the Spartans, 16-10, in the paint in the second period. The Eagles led, 64-59, with 4:05 remaining in regulation. Although they were held scoreless the rest of the way, UNCG also failed to make another shot from the floor before the final buzzer. Tevon Saddler sank a free-throw try with 2:11 showing on the clock to make it a one-possession game. Kayel Locke and Cain both missed layups in the final minute of the tilt that would have evened the score.
The Eagles enjoyed a 39-28 edge in the rebounding battle.Game Notes
