Recap: Northern Ill vs. Eastern Mich
DeKalb, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Jordan Threloff made a layup with four seconds remaining in double overtime to lift the Northern Illinois Huskies to a 61-59 victory over the Eastern Michigan Eagles in Mid-American Conference action at the Convocation Center.
Threloff dominated in the contest, netting 27 points and grabbing 18 rebounds for Northern Illinois (12-13, 6-7 MAC). Aaric Armstead also notched a double- double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Darrell Bowie pulled down 12 boards of his own in the win. The Huskies have won two of their last three contests.
Mike Talley netted 17 points, hitting 5-of-20 from the floor and 7-of-12 from the free-throw line for Eastern Michigan (15-11, 7-6). Karrington Ward added 13 points of his own, and Ray Lee chipped in 10 points in the loss, which snaps a three-game win streak for the Eagles. Da'Shonte Riley pulled down 13 boards to lead his team.
It was a miserable first half for both teams in terms of shooting, as Northern Illinois hit 17.9 percent from the floor, and Eastern Michigan connected on 17.4 percent. The score was tied, 16-16, at the end of the frame.
The Huskies improved to 40 percent shooting in the second half, but went just 1-of-7 from 3-point range. The Eagles hit 38.5 percent of their field goal tries, and connected on just 1-of-6 from deep. A Riley free throw with eight seconds left in regulation knotted the game at 47-47, which sent it to overtime.
Northern Illinois connected on 33.3 percent of its shot tries in the overtime periods, hitting 8-of-12 from the free-throw line as well. Eastern Michigan hit 21.4 percent in the extra periods. An Armstead free-throw with four seconds left in the first overtime period tied the game at 55 apiece. The Huskies had a 6-4 advantage in the second overtime, highlighted by Threloff's layup with time running down.
Northern Illinois had the advantage in points in the paint, 34-14, and in second chance points, 20-10. Eastern Michigan won the battle in points off turnovers, 25-7.Game Notes
