Recap: Xavier vs. Tennessee

Cincinnati, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Semaj Christon poured in 18 points as the Xavier Musketeers managed to hold off the Tennessee Volunteers, 67-63, at the Cintas Center.

Christon shot 7-of-13 from the field for Xavier (2-0) but nearly cost his team with a poor 4-of-10 showing from the foul line. Myles Davis notched 13 points off the bench, while Matt Stainbrook tallied 12 points, nine rebounds and three blocks.

For Tennessee (0-1), Jordan McRae posted 23 points and five assists, while Josh Richardson (13 points) and Antonio Barton (10 points) also netted in double figures. Jeronne Maymon ripped down 10 rebounds, while star forward Jarnell Stokes (four points, five rebounds, three blocks) fouled out in just 20 minutes.

Xavier led from the opening tip in this one. The Musketeers outshot the Vols from the field in the first half, 41.4 percent to 26.7 percent, on their way to a 27-20 lead at the break.

Tennessee was down by 10 with 2:40 to play before piecing together a 13-5 run to make it a 65-63 contest with just seven seconds left following a McRae 3- pointer, but Davis drained a pair of free throws on the other end to seal the victory for Xavier.

Neither team shot well from the foul line, as Xavier was 13-of-24 and Tennessee was even worse at 7-of-19.
