Recap: Canisius vs. St Bonaventure
Buffalo, NY (Sports Network) - Harold Washington scored 23 points to lead the Canisius Golden Griffins to a 72-69 come from behind victory over the St. Bonaventure Bonnies in a non-conference tilt at the Koessler Athletic Center.
Isaac Sosa added 14 points for Canisius (2-0), which improved to 2-0 after finishing last season with just five wins. Billy Baron chipped in nine points and five assists in the contest.
Chris Johnson paced the Bonnies (2-1) with 19 points and six rebounds. Demitrius Conger and Eric Mosely contributed 14 points each while Matthew Wright notched 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor.
SBU came out of the gates hot and shot 58.3 percent from the field on the way to its 37-32 halftime advantage. The Golden Griffins were ahead by six points at the 10:23 mark of the first half, but they surrendered their lead after converting only 10 of their 27 field goal attempts before the break.
Canisius went a perfect 10-of-10 at the free throw line after the intermission to chip away at the Bonnies' lead. The Golden Griffins went on a 13-4 run in the final minutes of the game to take a 72-69 lead. SBU had a chance to tie, but it suffered its first loss of the season as Wright's three-point attempt at the buzzer missed.
The Golden Griffins' head coach Jim Baron is now 2-0 with the program. Baron held the same position at SBU from 1992-2001. His current team outdueled the Bonnies despite losing the rebounding battle, 31-27.Game Notes
