Recap: Loyola-Maryland vs. Niagara

Springfield, MA (Sports Network) - Led by 23 points from Dylon Cormier, the Loyola-Maryland Greyhounds took down the Niagara Purple Eagles, 86-73, in the quarterfinals of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament at the MassMutual Center.

Erik Etherly added 21 points for the second-seeded Greyhounds (22-8), while Shane Walker posted a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.

The seventh-seeded Purple Eagles (14-19) were led by Juan'ya Green with 22 points and eight assists, while Malcolm Lemmons and Antoine Mason each chipped in 11 points.

Loyola shot well out of the gate, connecting on 55.0 percent of its field goals, but missed all three of its three-point attempts in the first half. Niagara shot only 42.9 percent, but connected on 4-of-7 from beyond to arc to keep pace, as the teams entered halftime knotted at 37-37.

After the break, the Purple Eagles struggled from the floor, making only 37.9 percent of their field goals, but still shot well from long range, hitting on 6-of-14 from beyond the arc. The Greyhounds continued their strong shooting in the second half, knocking down a scorching 69.2 percent from the field, including 5-of-7 from three-point range.

Loyola pushed its lead to double digits with a 17-6 run midway through the second half. After Niagara cut the deficit to five with 2:46 remaining, the Greyhounds scored 12 of the final 16 points to get the win and advance to the conference semifinal for the first time since 2007-08.

Loyola dominated the scoring in the paint, doubling up Niagara 44-22. Loyola also won the battle of their boards, grabbing a 33-25 rebounding advantage.

The Greyhounds will play Siena in the tournament semifinals on Sunday.
