DETRIOT, Mich.- The Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office has officially ruled homicide in the death of a woman shot in the face while seeking help after a car crash earlier this month.

19-year-old Renisha McBride, a black woman, was shot by an unnamed homeowner in the predominantly white Dearborn Heights suburb of Detroit. The man reported to police he thought she was an intruder trying to break into his home. He told investigators the gun he was carrying discharged accidentally.

Civil rights activists believe McBride was shot because of her race, and are calling for tough prosecution.

The Detroit News reports McBride’s family believes the woman was going from house to house early November 2, looking for help after she crashed her vehicle into a parked car at approximately 2:30 a.m.

Cheryl Carpenter, the attorney of the 54-year-old homeowner, says her client was awoken at 4:00 a.m. by sounds he interpreted as “a person or persons” trying to break into his home. She told the Detroit News the shooting was justified and would not comment on earlier reports in which the shooting was called accidental.

Carpenter is cautioning premature judgment of the incident. “Let’s wait and not prejudice,” she said, “Nobody, including the police, the prosecutor or the public has all the information yet.”
