There’s a much bigger need for Angel trees in Tulsa-area this year.
The Salvation Army confirms it's seeing nearly one thousand extra kids in need of presents for Christmas.
"Right now they're empty but it's our wish that by Christmas they will be full," said Salvation Army Development Director Lindsay Sparks, talking about the shelves the organization is trying to fill with toys for children.
She says last year the Salvation Army helped nearly 8,200 angels. Sparks told FOX23 there are different reasons for the increase in need.
"It just depends on how big the families are that come in register,” Sparks said. “Some years you get families that have one or two children and some years you get the bigger families."
The Salvation Army is still two weeks away from the deadline for the Angel tree applications. The numbers could increase. Sparks says they’re waiting to see what the need will look like in Sand Springs and Broken Arrow.
"What we really need is people to put up and angel tree in their business or church,” Sparks told FOX23. “To spread the word about the angels this year, those thousand angels need to be adopted."
Salvation Army says you can help out by hosting toy drives and adopting angels. If you would like to give financially, you can text “JOY” to 85944.
The deadline for angel-tree applications is November 8th. The Salvation Army will begin putting up the Angel trees on November 12th.
