Victims of the recent wildfires in the Mannford School District are getting help with their school supply checklists.
Two days before the start of school, the district is using its open house to hand out donated school supplies to all the families displaced because of the wildfires.
Joe Anaya is one of those parents. It’s been two weeks since the wildfire but recovering hasn’t been easy.
“The fires are out but the tragedy is still here,” said Anaya.
Everything that meant something to him was lost in the wildfire. Pictures, birth certificates and his marriage license were all destroyed.
“It’s a lot to take in at first,” said Anaya. “It’s overwhelming.”
He shares that feeling with dozens of other parents who’ve lost everything. The Mannford School District collected enough backpacks, paper and pencils to help get these students through the school year.
“It renews your faith in people,” Anaya told FOX23.
People from all over Green Country donated to help the school district. Anaya’s son and daughter will be two of at least 70 kids benefiting from those efforts.
“Words can’t say it enough because they’ve given so much: their time, their money, the shirts off their back,” he said.
Anaya says he knows there are people a lot less fortunate than him. He’s organized a “Rumble for Relief” ride for the “Mannford Fire Relief Fund” on Saturday, August 25 to raise money.
It will begin at 10:30 Saturday morning at Danny Beck Chevrolet in Mannford. A $10 donation per bike is requested.
