A South Tulsa man came face to face with a burglar in his home with the homeowner standing his ground and even firing a number of shots.

It happened near 51st Street and South Lewis Avenue.

After a nice cool walk down South Columbia Avenue, Charles Sweeny realized something wasn't right at home.

"My own mental alarm was going off because that drawer is always closed and it's open," said Sweeny.

He said he just walked back into his home and saw his mother's old dresser had been opened.

"It didn't come open by itself," he said.

He picked up his gun on the way to that bedroom when he saw the burglar standing in the hallway.

"I quickly noticed someone standing in the entrance way to my bedroom. I just simply reacted, finger went on the trigger, clicked off the safety and I shot him three times," Sweeny told FOX23's Dontaye Carter.

Sweeny walked the news station around his home to show me how the man, police are not identifying, escaped.

"He made his escape by pushing my window unit out the window," He said. "Taking a 12-foot high dive out my bedroom window."

The AC unit was still on the ground. Sweeny said he thought the man was still back there when police said a man with gunshots wounds showed up at St. Johns Hospital.

"I wish I just had another boring day. I wish he would've just walked on down the street and none of this would've ever happened. I take no pleasure in this," he said.

Sweeny said the burglar didn't get away with anything. He believes he walked back inside his home shortly after the burglar got in, which prevented him from taking anything.

I guess the result is as ideal as can be. Mr. Sweeney isn't plagued with the mental burden of having had to take a life. The perp has held on to his life with hopefully a new chance to turn it around.

Mr. Sweeney needs to get a bigger gun and practice a little...that thug should have never lived to see the inside of a hospital.
