Green Country teachers spent Saturday learning how to protect their students.
The Oklahoma Second Amendment Association provided free classes to teachers and school employees. The class came as lawmakers work to decide if teachers should have the right to carry guns in their classrooms.
A house committee passed a measure giving school boards the option to allow teachers who receive law enforcement training to carry guns.
However, the state wouldn't provide any of the funding.
Swim Coach Joann Bentley joined about a dozen teachers at SpiritLife Church in Tulsa.
"Danger can come in and if teachers are permitted and have proper training it aids in the decision making of how to protect their students," Bentley told FOX23.
Don Roberts, a gun instructor, is educating these educators on how having a gun could save their life. He’s hoping lawmakers don't blow off the idea of teachers carrying guns for protection.
“Just allow the staff there to protect our most precious asset our kids," he said.
TPS Superintendent Dr. Keith Ballard says he's against arming teachers because it’s an unfunded mandate. He told FOX23 he believes there is a way to keep kids safer but doesn’t think this is it.
