A Cherokee County store clerk is recovering after a very terrifying moment. He was forced into a walk-in cooler by a masked gunman trying to get his hands on some extra Christmas cash.

The robber hit Speedy's convenience store outside Tahlequah around 11 on Thursday night.

The robbery was all caught on camera. Investigators saw the video Thursday for the first time, watching the gunman walk the clerk back in and over to the register to open it.

"He's got this mask on that covers everything but his eyes," said Cherokee County Undersheriff Jason Chennault.

The robber was covered from head to toe. Deputies say they couldn’t even get a solid description and neither could the clerk.

"He did a good job of calling us,” Chennault told FOX23. “Getting himself safe. He wasn't in a position to see him leave."

Chennault says the robber stole $2,000 before making the clerk go in a walk-in cooler.

"He was shaken up. He's a young guy. This isn't something that happens around here a lot," said Chennault.

FOX23 spoke with the store's owner. He declined to go on camera and so did employees who told us security is being tightened. Chennault says in these cases the last role you want to play is hero.

"Do whatever the suspect tells you, don't put yourself in harms way. Its money, it's not worth your life," he said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Cherokee County Sheriffs Office at (918) 456-2583.

I have several in-law family members that live in Tahlequah and we have frequented this store many of times over the past 15 years. I wanted to say to the clerk that he did the right thing by giving the robber the money and what ever else he wanted to avoid losing his life that night..KUDOS!!!
