A single mother found herself scrambling to find a place for her and her children to live after her house caught fire. She was looking for a place to live and found a great deal on Craigslist, or so she thought. Before she knew it her electronics were gone and she was booted from her residence. FOX23 tells this woman’s story as a warning to others.
As soon as she realized she had been lied to, Kimberly Mayfield filed a police report. Unfortunately, it won't bring back the $750 or the electronics she believes the man stole from her, but at least it brings the truth to the surface so police and others can be aware.
"The gentleman let me inside the house and told me that I could rent it, and no deposit if I cleaned up the house and just had to pay the first month's rent," she said.
Mayfield lost her home to a fire and needed a new one quickly. She found an ad on Craigslist for a rental property in east Tulsa, so she made the call.
The man told her if she paid $750 for the first month's rent and cleaned the place, she could move in Oct. 22. She moved in without signing a lease.
"I came home this last Friday and realized all of my electronics were gone. Everything that my children owned and everything that I owned is now gone," she said.
She believes it was a man named Shawn who rented her the property and took her stuff. Somehow Shawn was able to access the key box and make a copy of the key inside.
"The only way they could get in is with a key, and I called this gentleman and confronted him about the issue and he listened and then hung up," she said.
Mayfield later discovered the home is a foreclosure by the Bank Of Oklahoma. FOX23 went to Shawn's place of employment, his last known residence and called him to get answers. However, we weren't able to reach him because both his place of employment and his apartment complex told us he had been fired and evicted.
