FOX23 has learned new information about a reported rape along the Illinois River.
Casey Strate and Andrew Dodson, both of whom are 22, are in custody for allegedly raping an 18-year-old girl.
It was reported just after midnight Sunday at the Diamondhead Resort.
Investigators tell FOX23 the 18-year-old Collinsville girl and the suspects didn't come to Diamondhead in the same group.
They say Slate and Dodson invited the girl and her friend to their party to play beer pong.
FOX23 has also learned that an off duty deputy also happened to be at the party.
Capt. Bill James of the Scenic Rivers Commission Ranger Division told FOX23 that "two members of his (the deputy's) group put him in a bad situation."
James also said the deputy had no idea that the girl was being raped.
The girl became very drunk and the captain said the two young men carried her to a tent. Another girl was inside the tent asleep. James said she heard what was going on and ran for help. That's when the off-duty deputy took action.
"He told the two guys get out of the tent, get out of the tent now," James said. "He prevented it from going any further."
The deputy talked with rangers on scene and will now most likely be very helpful in the investigation. James said the investigation could be a lengthy one.
"He could really be a witness and help in the prosecution."
The DA is working on a warrant to allow them to take DNA swabs from the suspects.
