TULSA, Okla. - Dozens of people went without water for hours Wednesday because of a water line break in west Tulsa.

It happened near 23rd street and Maybelle.

While it seems like part of a series of water line breaks in Tulsa, FOX23’s Farron Salley found out the city is averaging fewer breaks than in previous years.

The five-year average of water line breaks in Tulsa is 1,149. Last year there were only 876.

But that doesn't matter when the one that happens cuts off water at your home, which is exactly what happened to Jeff Martin.

“I was planning on taking a bath before I headed out, turned on the tap and only got a little bit because of the pressure from the water heater,” he said.

And he's not the only one who had a rude awakening Wednesday morning.

“I got up to go to the restroom and went to flush the toilet and there was no water,” said Danny Jones.

Crews were slowed down repairing this break because they couldn't find the source of the problem. And the freezing temperatures didn't help.

The frigid temperatures caused the water that leaked onto the street to freeze.

Traffic was down to one lane.

“Hopefully not too much longer, because my wife's gotta work tomorrow, she needs to go ahead and get her bath in, and we got to go and give my daughter a bath for school tonight,” said Martin.

The city hopes it's over soon, too.

Water distribution manager Rick Caruthers told FOX23 the city makes budget projections each year based on the number of leaks and overtime that crews get to fix them.

One thing is for certain, crews hope it warms up so they'll be able to move around more and get breaks like this one fixed up in less time.

City officials said the water line break undermined the westbound lanes of 23rd between Jackson and Maybelle. The lanes will be closed until the street can be repaired, likely early next week.
