Student safety, district growth and the question for people in Bartlesville: How to pay for it.

Voters took to the polls Tuesday and passed a school bond by a ratio of 3-1.

There was clearly a difference of opinion when it came to the proposed $37-million bond issue.

FOX23 spotted billboards in town showing how strongly some opposed it, but once we got to Bartlesville, only those in favor wanted to talk about the school bond.

"I want my children to have the best opportunity that they can have,” Dr. Aaron Bulleigh told FOX23.

He advertised his opinion on an electric sign outside his dental clinic in town.

"One of the criticism's we are hearing from people who are considering moving here is that the schools are run down and not as impressive as the Owasso schools,” Bulleigh said.

The quality of education is often considered a major factor when families and businesses are choosing a place to live.

The district wants to expand and renovate the high school, which would open up better facilities for younger students.

However, safety is also a concern, especially after the scare at Bartlesville High late last year when student Sammie Chavez allegedly threatened to blow up the school.

“There is no way you can put a price on the safety and well-being of your children,” fellow supporter John Lard told FOX23.

That may be true but with the bond vote, it all comes down to money.

FOX23 looked on the school district’s website, which has a link detailing the specifics on how the bond will be paid for.

The school says it will be a tax renewal, not a tax raise, and that it will replace older bonds as they expire.
