Sometimes disasters bring out the best in people.
Volunteers have been doing what they can to help fire victims. Some in Drumright and outside Cushing have lost everything in a wildfire, but they say what one volunteer has done has already made things better.
At six-years old, Landyn Myers is still pretty shy, but what he did for Kelly and Jamie Boyer says plenty.
The couple only had a few minutes to pack up and leave over the weekend outside Cushing. Flames turned everything near them to ash. Just hours after their warning, their home was burned to the foundation.
Later that day, Kelly and Jamie grabbed the phone and told Landyn's mom, Cassie what happened. They've been friends for years. She didn't know she wasn't the only one listening.
"He heard me talking on the phone," said Cassie.
So, Sunday morning, Landyn brought up an idea to Cassie. He suggested they open a lemonade stand. He'd already figured out how much he'd charge: 50 cents a glass.
“We were out from noon until 4," said Cassie.
Even kids stopped by for a taste.
"I wanted to help the people that lost their homes," said Landyn.
Landyn didn't have the power to stop the flames. Some are still burning, but in a way, he did make it all better.
"He has such a big heart. It’s people like him that's kept our spirits up," said Jamie Boyer.
"I was very proud of him,” said Cassie.
Landyn stuffed all the dollars and cents he earned into an envelope and before handing it over, he wrote a message: “sorry about your home.” It didn't say much, but it got the point across.
Landyn raised $127. The Boyers said they have insurance, and they're looking to relocate to Stillwater.
