Class doesn’t start for students at Union schools until Monday, but the hallways in one building were buzzing Friday with students back three days early.

Student athletes volunteered to help teachers set up their classrooms and prepare for the start of classes.

“It’s just what redskins do,” senior football player Coleby Evans told FOX23 as he headed in to help, “You help out your other redskins.”

Three weeks ago we told you about the lightning that sparked a fire at Union’s eighth grade center.

And earlier this week, FOX23 checked in on the progress and found out repairs are almost done, but not quite.

Sixty-five thousand dollars’ worth of damage resulted in teachers not getting into their until just 6 days before the start of school

American history teacher Donna Hickman says that’s weeks later than normal.

“We’d be back in August; teachers are in the building all summer long. So we’re cramming in lots of things we need to do just since Tuesday.”

We got a copy of an email from the district’s athletic director calling for help, and quote as much as possible.

Students athletes like senior football player, DJ Henderson, answered the call.

“[Our coach] wanted a lot of the seniors to show how dedicated we are and really lead and help the teachers,” Henderson explained.

“They’re numbering our textbooks and being the brawn, and carrying them around for us,” Hickman said. “And it is a tremendous help because we have so many other things we need to be doing.”

Talking with students and teachers, we found out the students also earned service points for their help, but Henderson’s reasons for showing up was more simple.

“It’s about being a redskin. That’s what we’re taught to do, always help out the community.”

Teachers tell us even with all of these books put away and the help from students, they’ll still be here throughout the weekend preparing for school on Monday.
