The 6A state championship is a game that students, faculty, and staff have been waiting for over a week now.
The 6A state title game between the Union Redskins and the Jenks Trojans kicked off tonight at 7 p.m. at TU’s Chapman Stadium.
These are two of the biggest rivals in the state of Oklahoma, and the atmosphere is always electric.
With fans this fired up you might think you’re at an NFL game, but its two powerhouse high school football teams hoping to be crowned a champion. FOX23 found Jenks senior Marshall Pearce sporting gold flair and no shirt.
“Jenks-Union is the biggest rivalry in the country, possibly the world. I would say the world, but Union, well they don’t want it and Jenks does and it’s a big game with people watching everywhere,” Pearce said.
The Jenks Trojans are fired up in more ways than one.
“You know everyone wants to get excited about something and it’s just an awesome thing for both teams to be so unified and it’s just an awesome thing for everyone to see," Jenks senior Paige McGarvin said.
Over on the west side of the stadium, Union’s fans weren’t about to go quietly in the night.
“It’s the biggest rivalry in the state, I mean it’s Union and Jenks," Union junior Rett Keeter said. "It’s two teams getting together and we talk a lot of trash on twitter and stuff like that and we have a lot of stuff and fun leading up to it.”
For this senior, the bigger the hype, the better.
“It’s huge and it’s like a big event where you have the kind of reciprocation that you would have at an NFL game or a concert because it’s so big and so live,” Keeter said. “To see my friends out there playing and working their butts off for this and they’re bringing back a gold ball today.”
Players from Jenks and Union are some of the most top-recruited college players in the area.
Typically, both or one of these teams always have a showing in the playoffs each year. Both teams were set to face off last Thursday in Stillwater, but severe weather forced them to reschedule the matchup tonight.
It's been 21 years since a team other than Jenks or Union have won the 6A state championship. Jenks won the gold trophy last year and this year, Union is hoping to bring it home with them.
Fans from both schools always turn out in large numbers hoping that their team -- will walk away with the pride of being state champions and the title.
Both teams said they are ready for tonight's battle and look forward to seeing who will walk away the victor.
