Oklahoma Highway Patrol said two people died in a head-on collision in Mayes County Wednesday night.

The accident, officials said, occurred at approximately 6:30 p.m., just four miles south of Locust Grove.

Officials said Cooper S. Day, 47, of Tahlequah was driving southbound on Highway 82 when he struck Benjamin M. Morgan, 20, of Peggs, who was driving northbound, head-on.

Troopers reported Day tried to pass another vehicle that was turning right into a private drive when the accident occurred.

Day refused treatment at the scene, troopers stated.

Morgan and his passenger Evelyn M. Hayes, 43, also of Peggs, both died at the scene, troopers reported.

The other passenger in Morgan's car, Robert L. Shepherd, 41, of Peggs was flown to a Tulsa hospital where he was treated and released, troopers said.
