EDMOND, Okla. (AP) _ Two young girls were injured when they were struck by a vehicle while crossing a street to watch a large fire  at an unfinished apartment complex in north Edmond.

Police spokeswoman Glynda Chu said Monday the girls, ages 6 and 7, were crossing Covell Road to get closer to the scene of the blaze when a car hit them.

Chu says the girls were transported to Presbyterian Hospital in serious condition. Their names weren't released.

There were no other injuries reported.

Fire Maj. Bill Brown says the complex was unoccupied, andofficials had accounted for construction crew members working at the site.

Brown says about one-third of the complex was heavily involved in flames by the time firefighters responded to the call around 6 p.m.

Once again, where were the parents? Six and seven year old girls should not be out walking around, crossing busy streets by themselves....fire or not! I'm sure that the authorities know the identities of these kids, and parents, and should charge the parents with child neglect. (if not for this particular accident, maybe for never teaching them any better.) My sympathy for the girls though. Was the driver that hit them charged for inattentive driving? Probably looking at the fire and talking about it on a cell phone while driving.
