There was no stopping the Daytona 500 in Florida on Sunday, just one day after a nightmarish crash happened on the very same track.
The crash injured 28 fans on Saturday when a racecar crashed during the final lap. The crash sent chunks of metal and a tire into the grandstands.
NASCAR fans in Oklahoma tell FOX23 they were scared watching the crash unfold on their television screen.
“That was real bad and I hate that the fans got hurt like that, but it is a risky business,” said David Wilburn.
Despite the wreck, Wilburn says he is still an avid racing fan and was glued to the television screen during the final Daytona 500 laps.
“I’ve been a fan for probably 45 years,” said Wilburn.
NASCAR fan, Eric Withrow, tells FOX23 the competition in Florida was nail biter.
“It just gets the adrenaline pumping and it’s exciting,” said Withrow.
Withrow says he had a couple of competitors he was rooting for but he was most impressed with Danica Patrick and hoped to see her continued success.
“Danica Patrick is the first woman to lead the Daytona 500 and first to finish in top 10, she was right in the mix,” said Withrow.
Jimmie Johnson finished as the Daytona 500 champion followed by Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Mark Martin.
