On Thursday, the Supreme Court of the United States upheld the majority of the Affordable Care Act, the overhaul of the American health care system spearheaded by President Obama.

In
Tulsa, there was no shortage of opinions on the decision.

For Jeremy Everett, who is uninsured, the ruling made him believe he would pay a hefty tax if he did not get health insurance by the time the law goes into effect in 2014.

Jeremy doesn't like that.

“With them wanting to penalize people because we don't have insurance, I mean there's a lot of people who don't, it just doesn't seem right that we should be penalized because we can't afford the health care,” Everett said,

Not everyone without insurance will be penalized. FOX23 took Everett's stats and calculated what the new health care rules will mean he be eligible for an expansion of Medicaid when the ACA becomes law, but only if Oklahoma agrees to comply with the new law. There is no guarantee that will happen.

“They should probably comply because I don't want to be hurt by the state because they don't want to do what they're told to do,”
Everett said.

Jeremy also says he doesn't think this is last battle in the war over the health care overhaul.

“With the election coming up, they're going to try to flip it back and forth.”

One person surprised by the ruling was local Doctor Ken Muckala.

“I thought that it would probably be struck down, I was very surprised,” he said.

Dr. Muckala says he is happy health care is being expanded to more Americans, but he doubts we can shoulder this financial burden.

“Many of these people have high acuity illnesses. They're very sick and so, it's going to cost all of us to take care of these people.”

He thinks most of his colleagues in the medical field will agree.

“I am like everyone else in the community, we hate to see change, I am somewhat skeptical about what the politicians have to say,” Dr. Muckala told FOX23.

Dr. Muckala says he will continue to offer his patients the same level of care, and he won’t worry too much about the new law because there's still a lot of time left before most provisions go into effect in 2014.

I read all 1100+ pages of the bill, nowhere does it say it is free to anyone, it says, "every American citizen will be required to PURCHASE a health care package/plan", it also talks about the level of care and treatments which will be offered to the elderly and the very young, especially those with cronic illness, birth defects and degenerative diseases, most of the treatments and procedures will be offered for those 15 to 40 years of age, everyone else will have care only slightly worse than the local free clinic or Indian Health Care center. Many American doctors and nurses are set to retire or just quit, which will mean our care will be either foreign doctors and nurses mostly or done by Nurse Practitioners and Med. students. Over 900 companies asked for and were given exempions, ask yourself why they didn't want this care, and ask yourself why they have to threaten to jail you or fine you to make you buy this wonderful health care....Yes it does say you can be jailed, or fined up to 700.00 or both, the IRS will have access to your health and financial records, they can fine you, withhold our tax refund or put a lien on your property, it also says that in the bill. Then there is the Religious Conscience clause on page 170 which means groups who do not believe in buying health care will not have to, but we will pay for them too, such as the muslims who believe it is gambling or risk taking to buy health care insurance, also the Amish, although they don't use doctors or health care ins. they doctor their own. Folks needed to read this bill and not just take Washingtons word for what is in it. Lots of people are going to be really surprized when they show up for their "free" health care.LOL

I"M Glad this is being uphelp...As a person who has had major medical issues since age 2. I feel stuck in Jobs due to loosing insurance because of pre-existing or the FEAR of NOT being able to aford insurance. This might not be the perfect plan but it is better than waht we have. IF you have not had major medical you probably don't see the good in this. I also havea daughter who has had sever asthma since birth being a premi and as she has grown and is now working we have to fight to get new insurances to cover it should not be that way.
