FOX23 found area tornado sirens are being improved in Green Country.

FOX23’s Frank Wiley talked to the Tulsa Area Emergency Management and learned the sirens will be improved to extend the reach, making them louder.

Officials say there are more than 80 sirens in Tulsa and others scattered through Green Country. The current sirens are designed to alert people within a mile, the new ones will extend beyond a mile.

“The older sirens, the drivers are getting weak and getting old. We’re going from an older style to a newer siren,” said Jamie Ott from Tulsa Area Emergency Management.

Crews have been replacing the sirens since last spring, grant money is paying for the improvements.
