A Tulsa student will be honored at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade after winning the Bob Hope Essay Contest.
Union High School junior Megan Harju, drum major for the Renegade Regiment Marching Band, was named the winner of the Bob Hope Essay Contest associated with this year's Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
She was recognized in New York during the final Parade Committee luncheon meeting Tuesday afternoon.
She will be singled out on national television following the performance of the Union Renegade Regiment on Thanksgiving Day. She will receive a $5,000 scholarship and Union bands will receive $5,000.
"We are ecstatic that Harju received this honor," Band Director Matthew McCready said. "We are so proud of Harju and thankful for the organizers of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade for selecting her and inviting Union Public Schools to participate in the parade."
Each participating band in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade was allowed to submit one essay to the Bob Hope Scholarship Essay Contest. Union's band staff received essays from 12 students, McCready said, and Harju's essay was selected after careful consideration.
McCready applied for the band to participate in the parade two years ago. He officially got word that the Regiment was accepted in April 2012, and the band has been working hard all year to prepare for its visit to the iconic parade.
