Dozens of police officers, a bullhorn and even pepper balls weren't enough to get a barricaded man out of his south Tulsa

apartment. FOX23 was on scene of the London Square Apartments near 61st and Lewis streets Thursday around 9 p.m., as police were in a standoff with David Childers.

FOX23 spoke with officers who revealed the final steps that got Childers out.

It took nearly six hours and more than 50 officers but police said this standoff was a really good example of how to attack this kind of situation.

"Right in front of here was like a squadron of police cars," said
Don Collins.

Collins tried to leave his apartment Thursday evening and walked right into the standoff between police and a rape suspect.

"She'd yelled at me, 'Get back, don't come down here,' so I'm like, 'OK,'" Collins said.

The Tulsa Special Operations Team came in to help after pepper ball rounds didn't force David Childers out.

He was threatening to hurt himself or anyone who came in for him with a knife.
A difficult situation for police to navigate, but they say not nearly as tough as if he had a hostage.

FOX23 spoke with Tulsa Police Capt. Ryan Perkins who works with the Special Operations Team.

What we do in those situations is significantly different than what we do in a barricade situation like this, where the suspect is alone," he said.
"In those instances we have lots of time on our side to be able to set things up as safely as possible."

They'd been told Childers only had the knife, but there was no way to be sure, so neighbors surrounding the unit were evacuated.

Next the Special Ops team threw tear gas through the window.

"He immediately had a desire to get out of that room. So he un-barricaded very quickly; came out the door," Perkins said.

However, the fight wasn't over for officers.

Childers start fighting police as he came out, so they shot him with rubber bullets and were finally able to arrest him.

Why didn't they just shoot him and get it over with?? Now we have to house feed pay lawyer fees and the rest of that crap for someone who would rather be (needs to be) DEAD.

Why did they report using "chemical agents" and not just be honest about using tear gas? Just makes them look like they are hiding something.
