Tulsa mother Andrea Smith is charged with child abuse murder for allegedly striking 2-year-old Xavier Jordan Wade in the stomach, causing a liver laceration that killed him.
According to the affidavit, Smith called 911 on Sept. 7 because the child was having abdominal pain, crying and throwing up. She said his hip looked swollen.
Smith told EMSA that Wade's 5-year-old sister kicked him in the groin three days earlier and he had a bump on his abdomen.
The doctors noted no injuries or bruising to his stomach, found he was constipated, prescribed some medicine and sent him home. The report did note lacerations to his forehead and an abrasion on his chin.
On Sept. 9, Smith said she was running errands and when she got home, her boyfriend said Wade wasn't acting right.
Smith went to Walgreens and came home to find the child lifeless. She asked a neighbor to drive them to the hospital. On the way they flagged a police car and ambulance to take them to the hospital.
Wade was pronounced dead.
Doctors noted visible injuries to his body, some consistent with being caused by knuckles, a possible burn on his forehead, abrasions on the chin and neck, bruising on both temples, possible bite marks on his upper abdomen and left arm, injuries to both sides of the torso and hip areas and possible broken ribs.
An autopsy found his death was due to trauma. Injuries found included old and new rib fractures and multiple liver lacerations.
On Sept. 16, Smith admitted she and her boyfriend had punched Wade in the stomach in the days leading up to his death. She said she'd had a momentary lapse in judgment and lost her temper. She said her boyfriend punched him and thought he was a wimpy child that needed to "toughen up."
Smith later told police she didn't do anything intentional to hurt her baby, but that she feels like "someone should pay for her baby" so she would turn herself in after the funeral so "you all can slap some cuffs on me and take me to David L. (Moss Jail) so this can be over with."
She also told police she should pay because she "failed to protect him."
She also told police Wade's father was not there and police should stop harassing him.
She did not turn herself in after her son's funeral. She was arrested at a later date.
