Firefighters from Tulsa are in Washington, D.C. asking Congress to save federal grants from the budget cuts.
The Tulsa Fire Department says it counts on Safer and Fire Act Grants to hire firefighters, buy equipment and save lives. “In 2012, we saw about $135 million reduction in the overall funding of the grants, due to in part the Congressional delegation’s intentions to reduce the deficit,” said Chad Miller, President of the Tulsa Firefighters IAFF Local 176.
Miller says federal grants are key right now because state and local governments have cut back their funding for fire departments.
