As Hurricane Sandy bears down on the eastern seaboard, families back here at home are concerned about their loved ones living there.

Milton and Barbie Odom are the proud parents of six children. Living in Oklahoma, they are used to the storms here, but with two of their daughters living on the east coast, the threat of Sandy is on their minds.

"I called Brandi up and I said, are you getting ready for this big, huge storm, and she said Mom, yes of course,” says Barbie Odom.

Her other daughter, Jayme is a student at George Washington University, but is staying near Fredericksburg with her sister since classes are cancelled.

"She is prepared with the kinds of food you can make without electricity, and they have a wood-burning stove that can heat the house pretty well,” says Barbie.

"If they had an extended time of a power outage it could be a challenge, and that would be the biggest thing,” says Milton.

FOX23 spoke with Brandi on Skype about how her family is preparing for the storm.

"We've got our generator ready and we've got 15 gallons of gas and so I think we're set. Earlier, we saw people out on their patios bringing everything inside, and tying it down. Yards that usually are full of Halloween decorations are now all gone. We actually don't have cell phone service out here so we have to operate our cell phones off our Wi-Fi, so if our power goes out, that means no land line, no cell phone and that would be our main concern,” says Brandi.

Overall, the family says the biggest threat they are facing are power outages.

"If people aren't paying attention to this and taking heed and getting prepared, they sure should be,” says Milton.

Remember, if you have a flight headed towards the east coast, its imperative that you check your airline to make sure it’s not cancelled.
