City of Tulsa crews are taking advantage of the break from the winter chill to get potholes repaired all over town.

The past few days, they’ve been filling in small holes and cracks in the road, but won’t start digging in and actually replacing broken sections of road until tomorrow.

January and February tend to be the busy season for street maintenance crews.

“The plows aren’t the major issue on the potholes. The major issue is the freeze and thaw cycle,” said Tim McCorkell, the street maintenance manager for the city of Tulsa.

Since July 1, crews have filled more than 33,000 potholes around town, more than half of those have come in the past two months.

Even though mild winters the past two years seemed to cause fewer potholes, McCorkell said this has actually been a pretty average pothole year.

“There has been a lot of permanent construction and major rehabs done throughout the city. So, compared to years past I don’t think there’s as many out there,” said McCorkell.

But because the same guys who patch potholes also drive the plows and salt trucks in snow and ice, they’ve gotten a bit behind on potholes during this busy winter.

“When you have to address the snow and ice as much as we did, you do get behind some. But with these temperatures that we have now we’ve been able to catch up,” said McCorkell.

But it’s not just a constant winter freeze making the process slower; there are also fewer crews because of a citywide hiring freeze.

“Once we get the majority of the larger ones that are covered to keep them from causing any damages to vehicles, then we’ll start doing more of permanent fix using hot asphalt and then some concrete repairs,” he said.

Crews have also taken advantage of this warmer weather to clean up the salt and plow trucks and make any necessary repairs in case there is more snow and ice in Tulsa.
