Where does Tulsa stack up in murders compared to other cities? You will be surprised where Tulsa is vs. New York City and Los Angeles. In 2003, Tulsa had 70 homicides which is the record. This time last year Tulsa had 52 homicides, compared to 59 now.
"At the rate we're going over the last couple weeks we're probably going to eclipse that from last year," Tulsa Police Officer Jason Willingham said.
New York City had 357 homicides this year, with a population of over 8.2 million people. That makes for one homicide per just over 23,000 people. The second largest city in the United States is Los Angeles, with 208 homicides, and over 4 million people. LA's murder rate is one homicide per just under 20,000 people. Now to Tulsa, so far 59 homicides, with a population just over 380,000, equals one homicide per 6,500 people.
"It's just sad, I think that's the only thing that comes to my mind is how sad it is," Tulsan Bryanna Davis said.
There are still six weeks left in the year, and TPD is saying it's tough to tell what the year end total will be.
"Is it the economy? Probably not because these people aren't normally affected by economic issues any how," Willingham said.
TPD also said the majority of the homicides in Tulsa are relationship type situations, or drugs.
