The Tulsa Chamber of Commerce is teaming up with local businesses to help thousands of veterans and military men and women in our area find work.
The unemployment rate in Tulsa is 6.4-percent. As unemployed people struggle to find jobs, it can be even harder for veterans.
Timothy Thrasher is enlisted in the Oklahoma Army National Guard. He joined the armed forces in June 2010 with hopes of a better future.
"I was having a baby soon and I had to do something to set my life straight," said Thrasher.
He is getting experience at Melton Truck Line, Inc. Thrasher is interning as an inspector. The father of two examines trucks and it’s also giving him a chance to examine his life. Thrasher is going to school at Tulsa Tech. He wants to become a Diesel Technician.
"It helps me a great deal. It makes sure that I can put food on the table and shoes on my children's feet,” he said. “That's all that counts to me as long as their taken care of."
Melton Truck Line is helping him to do that with hands on training. The company says people with military experience bring a level of discipline and work ethic they rarely see.
But add it's not just about the discipline; it's about paying it forward to those, who at anytime, could've paid the ultimate price.
"I think just giving back to those who have given so much to our country is a real big motivator for us," said Angie Buchanan, Melton Truck Lines, Inc. Vice President, Safety and Human Resources.
There are 915 drivers at the trucking company. At least 250 are military veterans.
Melton truck line has 100 driver positions that need to be filled.
