A proposal to limit the number of garage sales homeowners could hold was struck down by the Tulsa City Council Thursday.

The effort was meant to rein in what some call a nuisance while others say garage sales provide needed cash.

The councilors decided there may be an issue but there was no need to declare it an emergency.

Aaron Coffron said he'll do whatever it takes to sell his old records and everything else in his Midtown Tulsa garage.

“(I’m) cleaning out the garage so we can park the car," said Coffron.

But if a new ordinance is passed, Coffron would be done with garage sales for the year. City Council member Karen Gilbert brought this new ordinance to the table after she said people complained to her about people having neighbors with never-ending garage sales.

"They're having them over and over and over again, and right now our ordinance we have in place is pretty vague," said Gilbert.

So vague we learned the city ordinance doesn't have a definition of a garage sale. Gilbert presented an ordinance that would limit the number of days and how many times a year a homeowner could have a garage sale

Other council members thought they needed to look at how other places, like Oklahoma City, handle the issue.

"If they're trying to control how many yard sales people have is just simply charge a permit," said Gilbert.

After about 45 minutes of back and forth no agreement was reached and it's back to the drawing board about how to handle too many garage sales. The council will research other ways to control garage sales. Once they agree on an ordinance it will still have to go through the planning committee.

Oklahoma City and Lawton limit garage sales. I am surprised that Tulsa does not.

Heck sell it on the internet. Reduce the incidence of having strangers at your home. Ship it.
