AMR Corp.'s American Airlines is proposing cuts to 2,100 jobs in Tulsa.

The Chamber of Commerce and dozens of area leaders held a meeting Wednesday to ensure the people laid off won’t be stranded.

In a press conference, Tulsa Metro Chamber president Michael Neal said his big concern was keeping the American Airline Maintenance facility open in Tulsa.

He said the job cuts hurt but they were fighting to keep as many jobs as possible.

The American restructuring plan would close the maintenance facility in Dallas, Texas. Neal said of the people who will lose their jobs they will offer programs to help them get work.

One option, was bringing outsourced work here to Tulsa.

City Council Chairman G.T. Bynum said they just want the employees to know they are here for them.  “Certainly a difficult blow here for us as a community and our thoughts go to the folks who are impacted by this but as far as the aerospace industry in Tulsa we have an opportunity to move forward.”

The Chamber of Commerce is expecting to still have at least 4,500 jobs still after the restructuring process.

They do not know at this time how big of a hit the city will take financially with the loss of jobs. However, Neal says it will hurt.
