TULSA, Okla. - Since November, Trey Lippe Morrison has been training non-stop at Hurricane Training Center in Tulsa, for his first match in the ring. It's a way for him to honor his dad as well as create his own path.
It's a sport Morrison grew up around, but didn't pick up until a few months ago.
"My dad always wanted me to box," Morrison told FOX23.
Trey's dad is the late Tommy Morrison. A heavyweight world champion, nicknamed The Duke. As a kid, Trey boxed with his brother, but always pictured himself in the ring. Now when he's practicing, he feels his father's presence as he prepares for his professional debut.
"I could feel my dad, most definitely." Morrison told us. "He really wanted to train me and help me out. He said it to me a millions times, but I never got a chance to do it."
But now it's Trey's chance. Trey's trainer Pepe Johnson told FOX23 that he saw something special in Trey the first day he met him. He called him a natural athlete, and picked up the sport of boxing quickly. He also saw the similarities Trey had with his father, from his footwork and his gestures.
"It was like Tommy Morrison came in the gym." Johnson told us adding, "he's got some big shoes to feel, he wants to be better than his dad and his dad was one of the best heavyweight fighters out there. I hope he can do it."
Even though Trey is working to create his own path, he will do one special thing for his father.
"I actually have his original trunks that he fought in. They say Tommy on it. They were going to stay put my name on it, but I told them to keep his name on it."
Trey will take the ring Saturday at the Buffalo Run Casino and Resort in Miami, OK. Doors open at 7 p.m.
