In a matter of hours, 2012 will be behind us and a whole new year of opportunities will be ahead.

But before the night is over a number of lives will change dramatically. In fact in one hour, 30 people will be seriously injured in an alcohol-related crash. Those are the statistics nationwide on a normal night, but New Year’s Eve is not a normal night and that number will likely be even higher. That’s why it’s so important to have a safe ride home.

There are several ways to get home on New Year’s including calling the Tipsy Tow service or by calling a cab. If you choose a cab, you’ll need at least $1.50 just to get in and $1.90 per mile. A cab might be faster, but the Tipsy Tow program is free.

Paige Jenkins has been a bartender at the White Owl Pub for four years now. She loves bartending, but knows that it also comes with a great responsibility.

"We just make sure that nobody is getting too crazy for New Year's Eve, enjoying the night but not getting out of hand,” says Jenkins.

For people who do drink too much, there are several ways to get home safe.

"You can always ask your bartender to call a cab for you if you plan on staying for an hour, because this time of year, there is always a big wait for a cab,” she says.

FOX23 spoke with the Yellow and Checker Cab companies and last year alone, they had close to 900 calls on New Year’s Eve. The response time is at least 30 minutes, so plan on calling your cab at least 45 minutes in advance. The biggest problems cab companies see are people giving them the wrong address and the wrong phone number. If you don’t want to spend money on transportation, AAA’s Tipsy Tow service is the way to go.

"We'll take the person, a guest and their vehicle home and that's the only place we'll take them, and the tow is within a 15-mile radius from the point of pickup,” says AAA spokesman, Danial Karnes.

Tipsy Tow recommends calling an hour and a half ahead of time. Their heaviest call times on New Year’s Eve are between 1 and 4 a.m.

As AAA prepares for a long evening, so does Paige and the rest of the White Owl staff. The Tipsy Tow program will run now until 2 a.m. on Wednesday, January 2nd. You don’t have to be a member of AAA to get a free ride.
