A Texas man is due in court for a detention hearing after being charged with a hate crime.

Justice Department officials say 27-year-old Conrad Barrett of Katy attacked a 79-year-old black man in what's become known as a "knockout game" at the end of November.

Authorities say Barrett made a video of the incident-- and said he wanted to attack a black person.

The so-called "knockout game" is an assault where the attacker tries to knock out an unsuspecting victim with one punch.

Politicians have been jumping all over this to push new feel-good laws based on this non-trend, apparently because assaulting people wasn't against the law to begin with?
