Tahlequah Police are working to find a dozen guns stolen from a Northeastern State University professor. They found one of the guns, but the investigation continues through Cherokee County for the rest of them.

FOX 23's Farron Salley spoke to the Tahlequah Police Department about the theft. Investigators say they have been working for more than a month to try to catch a burglar and, more importantly, find the guns he or she stole.

"It can be traded and sold multiple times way under market-value for drugs or a cut-rate amount of money," said Tahlequah Police Chief Nate King.

King says guns can move in and out through county and even state lines. But his crew has worked to make a find.

"We've recovered one of the firearms that was stolen, based on a lead that we received, and we have several other leads that we're following up on," said King.

But he says going after valuable stolen property is a game where investigators have to stay a few steps ahead to win.

"We're chasing this stolen property, and it's a race to get to it before it's lost in that criminal network," said King.

The criminal network is so tightly-knit that he couldn't show the gun police recovered to the public – it could help criminals identify other pieces being sought in the investigation.

"It's a very nice collection of firearms, and we're hoping that we can get those back to Dr. Yider," said King.

King says they do have another lead they're working that could lead to more of the guns.
