Tulsa Public Schools is holding two parent and community forums to share proposed changes to Sequoyah Elementary School.

The forum is part of its annual review of schools, similar to Project Schoolhouse.

“Given student enrollment numbers and projections for next year, we are tight on space in several of our schools, including Mayo and Sequoyah,” said TPS superintendent Dr. Keith Ballard. “That’s why we are considering moving Mayo to the former Wilson Middle School building, and relocating students from Sequoyah to the larger facility at the former Cleveland Middle School. Not only will this solve our space issues, but it will allow for the expansion of Mayo in the centrally-located Renaissance neighborhood where Wilson is located.”

“In addition, we have plans for utilizing the space at Roosevelt that will please our Owen Park neighbors. These are just a few of the changes being considered for the 2012-13 school year. We will share more information at each of the two public forums scheduled for next week.”

The former Cleveland Middle School, at 724 N. Birmingham Ave., Wilson Middle School, at 1127 S. Columbia Ave. and Roosevelt Elementary School, at 1202 W. Easton St., were all closed under Project Schoolhouse.

The public forums are open to parents and the Tulsa community it will be held from 6-7 p.m. at the gym at Sequoyah Elementary School (3441 E. Archer).

“It is important that we give parents and the community a chance to weigh in on these very important decisions,” said Ballard. “By making these course corrections every year, we can avoid the mammoth changes we were forced to make last year and maximize the opportunities for students. I am anxious to hear what parents, students and the community have to say.”
