Tulsa Public School high schools could soon be filled with khakis and polos or something very close to that. The school board will decide in February whether to require uniforms in all high schools. Right now, Rogers, East Central and McLain are the only three high schools that require uniforms.

Micah Surratt is a senior student athlete at McLain and was just accepted to the University of Oklahoma. He wasn’t happy when he found out he had to wear a uniform.

"Junior year we get this letter in the mail saying you have to wear uniforms or you can't come to school, so Wal-Mart was my friend that day,” says Surratt.

He wore a uniform in middle school and was looking forward to expressing his individuality in high school. Two years later, he’s feeling more positive about his blazer and dress pants.

"It's not that bad, I have went to interviews wearing my jacket and they are all kind of shocked because it's easier to get an interview set up and go directly to school,” says Surratt.

Dr. Ebony Johnson is a co-principal at McLain and believes in what the uniform represents, and what it brings to her student body.

“It's given our school a new face due to a previous unfortunate reputation, so we're excited about our students standing out,” says Johnson.

That new face comes in the form of increased grades and attendance.  In the 2010-2011 school year, attendance numbers were just over 78%.  Now, the numbers are up to nearly 84%.  In 2009, McLain students held and C and D average. After uniforms and an intense discipline focus, students are now carrying a C and B average with more headed for college.

There were 15 incidents of bullying this time last year, and now there have only been 4 cases.  Micah believes the uniform has helped give guidance and structure to his classmates.

“I think it has and I think it will. I've seen some people that I went to middle school with do a lot better, and I've seen myself do better,” he says.

The Tulsa Public School board is scheduled to vote on the uniform requirement for all high schools at its next board meeting on February 6th.

I totally agree with this. I believe the school that needs it the most is Central High School. It will take the focus off appearance's and allow the children to focus on their academic scores. This is a wonderful thing.

There is NO evidence that uniforms stop bullying--although pro-uni people continue to claim that all over the country!! I was a HS Governing Bd member for 8 yrs. Instead of uniforms, we passed an anti-bullying code which worked well. It punishes kids who make fun of others' bodies OR clothing; it thus ALSO punishes one of the most common form of bullying--locker-room hazing!!

These kids are still going to bully and represent their gangs. When you take away the color and style they just alter the way they where these items to show membership to a certain group i.e. one or both socks up. Better education leads to better grades and less bulling. Not socialism.

my youngest was bullied this year and the only reason he is not now is because the kids who were bullying him moved out of state. But his grades have gone down a lot since the bullying has ended. My oldest is still being bullied and as a result his grades are falling. But nothing is being resolved as the parents of the bully can never be reached by phone and is never home when the principal goes to see them. And the child is not disaplined by the parents. As a result my son no longer wants to be in class or school for that matter and his grades are falling big time and I have no idea what to do, but we never had this problem before uniforms were required. My kids have gone to this school since kindergarden and pre-k and are now in 3rd, 4th and 6th and were never bullied until this year. Explain to me how the uniforms have done any good for my kids.

uniforms helping with the no bullying is a load of s___. Since the uniforms have gone into effect this school year, both of my boys have been bullied. One no longer is because the kids moved away and no longer go to school with him. My oldest son is still being bullied. The bullying has helped neither of my kids grades. Both have slipped lower since they have been victims of bullying. Even though my youngest son is no longer bullied, his grades have gone down a lot since the bullying happened to him. His brother who is still being bullied is getting worse grades as a result because he does not want to be in class because the kids call him bad names and hitting him and throwing things at him during class and nothing gets resolved because the parents of the child do nothing when it is brought to their attention that their child is doing wrong.
