Muskogee Police say the man wanted in connection to a shooting over the weekend turned himself in.

Police said Kenneth Jones turned himself in on Monday night. He is charged with one count of assault with a deadly weapon.

Muskogee police told FOX23 News on Saturday night around 11:30 p.m. a 5-year-old boy was shot in the back of a car in the Whispering Pines Apartment parking lot in the 2100 block of Fairmont Street.

"Car was driving away, someone stepped out and fired rounds in the back of the vehicle," said Muskogee Police Cpl. Michael Mahan.

The bullets traveled through the trunk into the backseat, where the kid sat.

"Very reckless and a disregard for human life, especially the life of a child," said Mahan.

Sources tell FOX23 News the boy's mother and a man were arguing when the man allegedly fired his gun.

Investigators say the 5-year-old was taken privately to Muskogee Regional Hospital and transferred to a Tulsa hospital where he is in stable condition.

"I don't like to see kids get hurt," said Barbara. She is a neighbor who heard the shots and only wants to use her first name.

Witnesses tell FOX23 News they heard four or five gun shots.

"My son was lying on the couch, I made him jump on the floor," said a mother who didn't want to be identified. "I was too afraid to look out the window."

FOX23 News saw surveillance cameras on the apartment buildings where the shooting happened.

"We have video surveillance from the scene," said Mahan.

Police hope to identify the shooter in the video. Officers say those who know what happened, including the mother, are not cooperating.

"I don't know why people are not coming forward, especially after a child has been shot," said Mahan.

Investigators say they have not found the gun.

Police say the suspect fled on foot and is still on the run.
