Students adopt dozens of Salvation Army angels, 100 angels still need adoption

A 6th grade class at Monte Cassino worked to adopt more than 100 angels off the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree; there are still 100 angels that need to be adopted.  

The children raised more than $9,000 and were able to adopt more than 100 angels. Originally, there were more than 9,000 angels waiting for toys.

Carmen, Bella and Dai’Lyn are on a mission to find the perfect gift for a child in need.

"My angel is six-years old and it's a girl and her name is Malasia, and she wants a Barbie doll house and an easy bake oven,” says Carmen Williams.

First, the trio heads off to Dillard’s to find a coat and gloves.

Then, it’s off to the Disney store to find a Barbie doll. Each of these girls along with their other classmates performed odd jobs to help raise money to adopt their angel.

"I babysat and we got $1,000 but I only got $500 of that because we had some people help and we had to pay them too,” says Bella Meshri.

"I raised money by having a bake sale and cleaning up around the house,” says Dai’Lyn Harris.

"I made bracelets, and they were homemade bracelets,” says Carmen Williams.

Now that all of the angels have been adopted off the tree, the Salvation Army says it is vital that you bring back your toy by Wednesday.

"We prefer that the presents be unwrapped, and that way the parents have the opportunity to wrap the presents for the kids themselves,” says Jenny Mcelyea with the Salvation Army.

Shopping for the angels really put things into perspective for these 6th graders.

'You don't really realize how much you take for granted when these kids don't have very much,” says Dai’Lyn.

"They don't get as much as regular people do for Christmas, so when you go and buy stuff for them, it makes you feel really good,” says Carmen.

"It makes me feel really happy that I can help them and support them,” says Bella.
