Coweta police have confirmed there was a shooting at the Coweta Intermediate School.

Police are on scene and have secured the area. School officials say the shooting was a suicide. FOX23 has learned it was a male, 9th grade student.

In a news conference just after 10 am on Monday school officials said the 9th grade center will be closed the rest of the day and parents have been notified they can pick up their students at the high school gymnasium.  School is not releasing further details, but said school is as normal in the rest of the district.

Friends tell FOX23 the student was Triston Stephens.

Coweta police are investigating the incident. The initial call came at 8:35 and three officers were on scene in seconds.  Police say the school did "an outstanding job" the intermediate high school and high school were placed on lock down immediately after the shooting.

There have been reports of suicides at Gore and Vian schools.  FOX23 talked to officials at those schools on Monday afternoon.  The Gore Superintendent tells FOX23 a 12-year old girl died over the weekend and grief counselors were at the school, but did not say the death was a suicide.  Vian school officials say there was no student death reported on or off campus.

@Aleman While I do agree with that some what, sometimes the parents do it because the kids are an eye sore, instead of the fact that they want to help them.

Not printable what google calls you maysnot...just saying it's not good for these kids to stay holed up in a room playing video games all the time, when we were this age dad would see us moping around depressed he'd drag us outside and put us to work or take us fishing or to the woods to get our minds off ourselves...

If he couldn't get on a 737 with it then why is it be possible for him to bring it into a school? How many more school shootings whether suicide or homicide are acceptable without taking real action to make sure it doesn't happen?

It is why I have always thought there should be a class in every grade that teaches kids manners,respect,ethics,gentility...all the things that should be taught at home but aren't anymore...school anymore is nothing more than a poor babysitting service...I knew a girl who dropped out after tenth grade because she couldn't go from class to class with out the gangbangers grabbing her rearend or chest with the teachers watching and laughing about it

To all those kids out there, hang on just a little longer. It will eventually get better if you are determined enough to learn from an abusive home life, and/or bullying. You grow up and realize you no longer have to be around that cruelty. you make the choice to be you. Dont let abusive parents, bad parenting, or bullying from peers bring you to a point where you think nothing is let for you. prayers and thoughts for the family and friends of this kid.

What teenager isn't half mentally ill?Lot goin' in this time of life...nature gives them the hormones of a fully grown, mature person...then makes them all scrawny and pimply and walk around with their mouths open...it is a rough time of life even for kids with wonderfull parents, about everything they think about life is wrong at this age,and no amount of talking or hiding your guns is gonna help...if they get it in their minds that this is a way out ain't a whole lot one can do but keep an eye on 'em
