Tulsa landmark, Steve’s Sundry, announced they will close at the end of the year.

The bookstore has been in business in midtown Tulsa since 1947. Owner Joanie Stephenson said their lease is up in early 2014 and the current status of the book industry led her to decide to close the store.

Below is the letter sent to Steve’s Customers:

Dear Friends and Loyal Customers,

Thank you for your many years of loyal support to Steve's Sundry. It is with regret that I must tell you Steve's Sundry will cease operation at the close of business on December 31, 2013.

Our lease is coming up for renewal early 2014, and with the current flux of the book industry, I have decided it is now time to begin the next chapter in my life. The economic climate, daily changes in the publishing arena, and internet buying culture, are reflected in the bottom line of my financials and ultimately made the decision. This was not an easy decision. Steve's Sundry has been a part of the Tulsa fabric since 1947; we are an institution. Multi-generations of customers have grown up coming to Steve's to sit at the soda fountain. Hopefully, someone in Tulsa will be interested in purchasing the soda fountain so its' legacy will live on.

So, what does this mean for you, our customer. You may see a reduction in inventory as we sell through items; we will continue ordering pre-paid special orders. We will no longer be issuing gift cards as of today. However, we will accept gift cards through December 24. After that date, gift cards (even if a balance is remaining) will not be honored.

We will continue with business as usual until December 24. In preparation for a inventory liquidation sale beginningSaturday, Dec. 28, we will be closed on Dec. 25, Dec. 26 and Dec. 27.

Inventory will be sold at discounted prices, and fixtures, office equipment, and the soda fountain will be available for purchase. All sales will be final and cash only.

Steve's Sundry, Books & Magazines has been proud to be an integral part of the Tulsa retail sector for 67 years. Thank you, thank you for being part of our lives. We will miss you.

Joanie Stephenson
