This Thanksgiving, beyond just cooking an incredible feast, you also want to make sure you’re able to enjoy it. Each year thousands of Americans wind up in the Emergency Room after suffering various injuries while cooking. Experts say you should make sure you’re not distracted while using unfamiliar appliances like a turkey fryer or rotisserie.

One Tulsa mom remembers when she hurt herself while using a familiar kitchen tool.

“A couple years ago, we got a set of new knives, and I sliced my finger open and ended up in the Emergency Room so that was kind of scary,” Lindsey Beeghly.

It’s not just kitchen mishaps that can ruin a holiday; stress can also derail even the best laid plans. Making stress go away could be easier than many people think says Donna Mathews with DVIS in Tulsa.

“Just take a deep breath before you go into a stressful situation, maybe take a few deep breaths in and out and then your body gets more oxygen, it calms you down,” she said.

If taking a few deep breaths doesn't solve your problems, ask for help.

“It's a good thing for everyone to chip in because no one is overly tired when everything is said and done,” Selena Hill told FOX23 as she shopped for Thanksgiving groceries.

Selena’s sister says you can also put your hands together.

“We pray do pray, pray a lot!

If none of those suggestions help, Mathews says don't be afraid to call professionals.

“Sometimes people do need a professional’s help when they are going through something like (Thanksgiving) to realize that life goes on, take a breath if things aren’t going as planned.”

If you do need help this holiday season, call the DVIS 24-Hour Crisis Line at (918) 743-5763.
