Fighting back tears is an ongoing challenge for Dianna Burch. Her daughter 23-year-old, Esther Johnson died Sunday, from complications after suffering gun-shot wounds to her head, back and chest.
“That was my baby, I loved my baby,” said Burch.
Johnson clung to life for five long, grueling years after being shot.
First, she was confined to a wheelchair and later, her bed. Her sister’s ex-boyfriend, Marcus Morgan caused the trauma. Johnson, her cousin and her sister’s fiancé were riding in a vehicle together, they were headed to enroll in college when Morgan spotted them. He was on foot and began firing shots.
“He was walking down the street with a gun,” said Burch.
Johnson’s cousin died instantly, and her sister’s fiancé died the day after Christmas.
“She didn’t want to be placed on life support,” said Burch.
Burch honored her daughter’s wishes. She says her daughter grew tired of the constant hospital visits.
Now, however, Burch is left with a void in her heart. She’s also losing sleep over how she will pay for a proper burial of her daughter, Johnson.
The family has since set up an account in Esther Johnson’s name at the Bank of Oklahoma. Also, donations are being accepted at Jack’s Funeral Home.
