Icy roads are blames for a crash that sent a semi into Lake Eufaula Thursday morning.

It happened along Intersate-40 just west of Checotah.

FOX23’s Janai Norman was on the scene and learned the weather is what OHP says caused the driver to crash through two sets of guardrails and into the lake.

“The conditions just make things ten times worse,” Trooper Burkley Cash said on the scene.

FOX23 is uncovering that’s where one crash led to another.

“[The truck] made a swerve to avoid [the first accident], lost control on the icy road and this is the result.”

The semi-truck was partially submerged in the lake and possibly leaking contaminants.

Trooper Cash said, “Obviously we have Lake Eufaula we have to worry about, make sure there’s no diesel leaking or oil leaking, anything like that.”

HAZMAT crews were on hand to inspect the truck and to decide it was safe to leave behind.

Their reason again point to the weather.

“The longer we go in the day, the weather conditions are going to get worse,” Dewayne Smith told FOX23.

Smith works for D’s Wrecker Service out of Checotah and told FOX23 crews would have to wait for conditions to improve before removing the truck.

“Because of weather, roads are slick and icy, traffic doesn’t take the precaution like they should,” Smith explained. “So when the guys are out here working, they just blast by us and that’s a concern.”

It’s a concern that’s become a reality for troopers who, according to Smith, have been flooded with calls related to weather wrecks.

“We got them stacked up,” Trooper Cash said.

“It is so slick, they never know when they’re going to spin out,” Smith told FOX23. “It just happens.”

Smith says crews will wait until the temperature rises above freezing next week to remove the semi.

I understand "we have Lake Eufaula to worry about"; however, I didn't read anywhere about whether the driver is okay or not (maybe I just missed that part somewhere?!) :-/
