With construction continuing on the Kialegee tribe’s Red Clay Casino, there is growing concern about a school being built just down the road.

The Broken Arrow school district has plans for a new elementary and a Pre-K center on 111th between 129th and 145th.
So could the casino change their plans?

Robyn Gertner is the mother of three children.  She says her family moved to Broken Arrow because they felt like it was a safe community to raise their kids.  But word on an elementary school being built near a casino has her very concerned.

"I think a casino is fine and I think they're fun, but I think it's better outside of a community instead of right in the middle of your school,” says Gertner.

Her biggest fear is the safety of her three small children.

"There's drinking going on and there is gambling going on and it's just an unknown, and it's not as safe as it could be,” she says.

We spoke with the district about when they knew a casino would be built and when plans were made for a school.

"I believe I received an email from our city manager on September the 9th and of course it was right before our bond issue in October. And at that time, we didn't know if it was going to really happen or not,” says Dr. Jarod Mendenhall, district superintendent.

The land for the school was purchased in December of 2010, well before any casino plans were made public.
Some people want the school to proceed, while others say the district should look at other properties in the area.
For Robyn, the answer is clear.

"If it's inevitable then yeah, I don't think they should build the school right there. They should find another location for it,” says Gertner.

Yes ReaperMedic, I have noticed the Hard Rock too close to Catoosa school and that's why these regulations should have been in place before it was built.

I can name several "questionable" sites or businessnes very close to my son's school. No one seems to care about that. Why should anyone care about this? Oh, because my son goes to school in North Tulsa and rich people are involved with this. Nevermind.

it was stated that the school was not made aware of the casino until september of 2011 and they had already purchased the land for the site in dec. 2010. question is what happens is they decide to move the site to a new location and something else pops up around the new site does the school keep moving the building of school? at some point you would think the school would just have to move forward with building the school.

So, who's lying? This story says the land was built before they knew of the casino. Other sites state they knew of the casino before buying the land. I love how no two news sites ever have the same information.

So far as the drinking goes, I think the casino's are the only ones who have it right. ALL bars, including those in B.A., serve right up until closing time. This requires everyone to leave immediately, most of whom drive home. At least the casino's are open long after they quit serving, giving the drinker an opportunity to stay until a time it is saft to get behind the wheel. If you are that concerned about drinking drivers start a petition to require all establishments to quit serving alcohol at least 2 hr. before closing.

To those of you who support the casino, build it in your neighborhood! By your logic, if Catoosa decidedly build a dog fight arena, should BA? Since Tulsa has so many "massage" (wink, wink) parlors, should BA have them too? There is a reason why BA consistently ranks as one of the top ten places to live. We just want our community to remain a great place for us, our kids, and their kids. Why do you suppose Tulsa's population has declined and Catoosa's has not grown while BA has exploded over the past ten years? Before you all start telling us how to run our town, perhaps you should clean up your first.

bored with hearing about broken arrows belly aching over the casino being built time to find some better news to report on like how many jobs the casino will bring to broken arrow and how much money it will bring to the city to help maintain the police force, fire department, etc, try to look at this as a positive thing

I have read where a number of people say there will be drinking there. I don't think the ones at the Casino should be their big concern. The majority of people I've ever seen at the Casino never even touch an alcoholic beverage. Do they even have a clue to how many people are driving under the influence, of drugs or alcohol at any given time, anywhere.
