A Sapulpa couple is behind bars after police said they found them high on drugs and firing a shotgun inside their trailer with two children nearby.
On Tuesday afternoon, a neighbor who lived in the same trailer park frantically called police.
Mark Brewer lives right next door to James and Diane Ely. He said that Tuesday night things got really bad when James began firing a shotgun for no reason.
"He shot from the inside out. He thought somebody was hiding in the bedroom," said Brewer.
Brewer said he often suspected the couple was using drugs inside the trailer. Police said his suspicions were correct.
"The Elys were both under the influence of meth and Mr. Ely thought he was seeing intruders in his house, and so he grabbed a shotgun and fired off a couple of rounds inside the trailer next to his wife and young children," said Maj. Mike Reed, with the Sapulpa Police Department.
After doing a search of the trailer, Sapulpa police found shotgun holes piercing the side of the wall.
Brewer said he often felt helpless but felt even worse for the two kids living inside the trailer.
"They could have shot the kids over here. They could have done anything," said Brewer
After getting the couple's permission to search their home, officers found meth inside the house, along with a pipe, weapons and other items used for drugs.
According to his affidavit, James Ely told police he thought someone was in their bedroom and that's why he started firing the gun inside his house.
One of the children told officers Ely handed him a gun at one point.
"It's very disturbing that someone would give a child a gun because he thinks he's seeing things and so he wants the child to try and protect him," said Reed.
The children were placed in DHS custody, while the Elys were arrested on numerous charges, including child neglect, possession of meth and possessing a firearm.
"I felt sorry for them having to go to DHS, but they weren't being taken care of here, so ..." said Brewer
Officers said the trailer the Elys and the children were living in was not suitable for children.
